ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes take place twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-10:30am, at our workshop at 207 Elm Street.
There is no tuition or fee, but they aren't free either: all students commit to a number of volunteer hours at ArteSana in exchange for accessing the classes. This model speaks to one of our core values, building in partnership.
One of the best things about Holyoke is that it is a bilingual city - 50% of residents are Hispanic and over 90% of these belong to the Puerto Rican diaspora - bringing a density of cultural richness that's uncommonly found in small cities. Among the Spanish speaking community there are many non-English speaking adults, who experience much more limited job and civil society opportunities. Yet in Holyoke there is a persistent unmet demand for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes for adults; every program in the city has a long wait list, especially for beginner level classes.
In response to this need, ArteSana started offering adult ESOL classes. Our classes are multi-level and cater to the personal and professional interests of students. They are taught by a certified ESOL teacher with decades of experience and a commitment to supporting the unique needs of adult learners.
